Summary0020471: Investigate why PPPoE cannot hit 1Gbs speeds
DescriptionRaised at Dave's request.

Following ticket 558584 and forum thread https://www.clearos.com/clearfoundation/social/community/internet-very-slow-when-using-pppoe [^] (two different systems), it appears that ClearOS cannot achieve 1Gbs using either the userspace rp-pppoe driver or the kernel mode driver. The kernel mode driver is much faster than the userspace driver (see https://tracker.clearos.com/view.php?id=20251 [^]) but not fast enough.

It appears from the ticket that pfSense can achieve the full speed so what have they done that we have not?

Linux vs BSD... it's a very different PPPoE stack!

There's likely a way to tune PPPoE in Linux for better performance though, but that's just an educated guess.
