So we can get community members to collaborate on them.

The same idea is done by the Tiki community and are called profiles. Community members collaborate in wiki pages: http://profiles.tiki.org/ [^] Profiles are very powerful and can be combined / included.

Ideally, it's possible to collaborate on them via a web interface. It could also be on Github, which has web edits.

On a related note, Tiki uses YAML which provides quite a bit of extensibility:

Exporting a live system configuration to QSF format would be really nice as well.

As a reference, here is how profiles are exported in Tiki:

ClearOS has a very useful mechanism for backups of configuration.

Maybe there could be a way to start from this. Likely the data would have to be cleaned up to remove domain names, passwords, etc.
